FAQ
Honest answers, before you have to ask.
Everything people usually want to know before booking. If your question isn’t here, just email. A two-line message is plenty.
Getting started
What happens in the intro call?
We just talk. You tell me what’s going on and what you’d like to be different; I’ll explain how coaching would work for that. If we’re a fit, we book a first session. If not, no hard feelings. I’ll point you somewhere useful.
Do I need a referral or a diagnosis?
No. Coaching doesn’t need a referral, a mental health plan or a diagnosis. If you’re finding things heavy and want somewhere to start, that’s enough.
Do I need to prepare anything?
Nothing. No forms, no homework before the first call. Come as you are. If it helps, have a think about what you’d most like to be different, but it’s fine if you don’t know yet. Working that out is part of the job.
Is coaching right for me?
Coaching suits you if you want to build self-awareness, handle stress or everyday anxiety, manage a life change, improve habits and mindset, or find some motivation and accountability, and you want structure and momentum rather than open-ended talk.
It may not be the right fit if you live with PTSD, schizophrenia, or severe anxiety or depression. You may need clinical care instead, and I’ll help you find it.
Sessions
How do online sessions work?
We meet over video or phone, from wherever suits you, anywhere in Australia. All you need is a quiet spot, an internet connection and a laptop, tablet or phone.
How long and how often are sessions?
Sessions are 50 minutes. How often we meet is agreed together on the intro call, based on what you’re working on and what your life can hold right now, and we revisit it as we go.
What if I want to stop?
Then we stop. Coaching is something you choose, session by session. If it isn’t working, I’d rather hear it and help you find something that will.
Can I do sessions by phone instead of video?
Yes. Video works best for most people, but we’ll find what works for you.
Cost
What does it cost?
The intro call is free. Sessions are $80 for 50 minutes, with no packages or lock-in.
Can I claim it on Medicare or private health?
Coaching generally isn’t covered by Medicare rebates, which apply to psychologists and other clinicians. If you have private health extras, it’s worth checking with your fund.
Coaching and therapy
What’s the difference between coaching and therapy?
Coaching is focused on the future. Like a sports coach, but for your mental wellbeing: I support, guide and motivate you as you take practical steps towards balance and growth. A coach doesn’t diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication or treat trauma.
Therapy is delivered by registered mental health professionals and focuses on processing past experiences, including trauma. It’s often used to treat diagnosed mental health conditions. Coaching isn’t a substitute for that, and I won’t pretend it is.
What if you think I need more than coaching?
I’ll tell you, kindly and plainly, and help you find a psychologist or GP. That’s not a rejection. It’s the most useful thing I can do for you in that moment.
Can I see a coach while I’m already seeing a therapist?
Yes. A coach can work alongside and support your treatment. Just make sure both of us know what support you’re getting, so we’re pulling in the same direction.
Is what I share private?
What you share in sessions stays between us. The one exception: if I’m ever seriously worried about your safety or someone else’s, I’ll talk with you about getting more support. I’ll explain exactly how that works before we begin.
What if I’m in crisis right now?
Please don’t wait for a website. Call Lifeline on 13 11 14, any hour of any day. In an emergency, call 000.
Ready when you are.
One free, unhurried conversation. If it isn’t the right fit, that’s completely okay.
